Matthew Fox takes lead role in Emperor
9th January 2012
Lost actor Matthew Fox will be in New Zealand this month to start filming the upcoming international production
Emperor.
The 45-year-old will play the lead role in the film based on post-World War II Japan directed by Peter Webber (
Girl with the Pearl Earring). Inspired by true events,
Emperor is an epic story of love and understanding set amidst the tensions and uncertainties of the days immediately following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II.
Fox stars as General Bonner Fellers, one of the men on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur charged with deciding whether Japanese Emperor Hirohito should be tried or hanged as a war criminal. The thriller is also a love story and Fox's character is influenced by his love affair with a Japanese exchange student.
Casting for other roles is underway and filming is due to start in late January 2012 in Wellington, Auckland and also in Japan.
Emperor is being produced by Yoko Narahashi (
The Last Samurai), Gary Foster (
Ghost Rider, Daredevil, Sleepless in Seattle, The Soloist), Eugene Nomura (
Tajomaru, Surely Some Day) and Russ Krasnoff (
The Soloist).
Emperor is a co-production between Fellers Film and Krasnoff/Foster Entertainment.
Producer Gary Foster said: “We are thrilled to be working with Matthew Fox who is a fine actor and whose maturity and appeal fits perfectly with our film’s aesthetic.”
