Greening the Screen
Film New Zealand has re-launched the Greening the Screen website. The site is now a totally up-to-date resource for screen production companies wanting to think and act smarter on 'green' issues.
Greening the Screen is owned by the Ministry for the Environment and now licensed to Film New Zealand. Film New Zealand engaged consultant Emma McConachy from sustainability consulting firm Green Fox, to work on revising the content of the website. Oktobor undertook technical enhancement to the website under a shared sponsorship arrangement with Film New Zealand. The result of this collaboration is a superb up-to-date environmental toolkit.
Development of the Greening The Screen website and toolkit was funded by the Ministry for the Environment, Landcare Research and Waitakere City Council and developed in association with South Pacific Pictures and SPADA, the Screen Production and Development Association representing New Zealand producers and production companies. It was initially launched at the SPADA conference in 2005. It has been widely endorsed by the screen production industry here in New Zealand.

Sustainable Production Services & Resource Guides for Auckland, Rotorua, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury and Dunedin regions
Film New Zealand engaged consultant Emma McConachy from sustainability consulting firm Green Fox to develop the Sustainability Guides for the popular filming areas in New Zealand. Following the hugely successful joint Queenstown Lakes District Council and Film Queenstown Zero Waste project developed in 2008, Film New Zealand believed it could further support regional sustainability and environmental initiatives with the production of these Green Guides.
The guides are intended to provide information on services and resources that are able to assist you in reducing the environmental impact of your Production or Production Company.

Sustainability Working Group
In November 2008 Film New Zealand hosted a sustainability session at the SPADA annual conference to re-present the sustainability issue to the industry. Part of what was discussed at that session was the Greening the Screen toolkit and website, developed in 2005, which historically put New Zealand at the forefront of sustainability initiatives for the industry. Since its development in 2005 Greening the Screen has sat dormant, largely due to a lack of funding, and has become outdated.
Film New Zealand has recognised the value of the toolkit and website, and funded an update of the website content in March this year. This update is now live on the website and was re-launched in August this year.
Attendees at the SPADA session were invited to attend an industry sustainability meeting hosted by Film New Zealand. The March 2009 meeting was attended by industry representatives, and concluded that the industry should have a Sustainability Working Group with pan industry representation to guide and inform the industry’s approach to sustainability. Invitations were sent out to industry representatives covering all aspects of the industry to attend the 1st Screen Industry Sustainability Working Group held in May.
This productive meeting was well attended, and resulted in agreement that the following actions should be taken:
- An industry organisation solely focused on sustainability should be developed. This organisation should have charitable trust or incorporated society status.
- An operational budget for the running of this organisation should be developed to indicate the level of funding required.
- The governing body for the proposed organisation will be made up of some or all of those present at the meeting.
Sustainable Business Network
Film New Zealand has joined the Sustainable Business Network and signed up for the Get Sustainable Challenge.
The Sustainable Business Network promotes sustainable practice in New Zealand and supports businesses on the path to becoming sustainable. They link businesses and provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences.
