Te Rerenga Wairua
An animated film about the Māori version of death and the hereafter - a magical rendering.
A breakthrough film that aims to treat the Māori theme with an adult respect and a sense of magic and beauty.
This psychadelic animation follows the spirit of a person who dies in a car crash on the motorway. On it's way to Te Rerenga (Cape Reinga), the life force (wairua) of the victim travels through forests and beaches, meeting other spirits and tourists on its way. When it finally reaches the ancient pohutukawa tree on the cape, the spirit can make its leap from the land to Hawaiki-Nui.
The '90s animation gives new life to this ancient Māori myth.
