As the COVID-19 virus continues to create uncertainty for us all, we at the New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) would like to update you on the measures we are taking to manage as much as possible the impact the pandemic is having on our industry.

Like everyone, we are monitoring the daily updates issued by Government and the Ministry of Health. At the bottom of this page are links to websites where you can keep yourself updated with information and advice.

Of special importance to the NZFC and all of the screen industry is production activity and the impact any production shutdown would have on the livelihood of producers and production companies, post houses, writers and directors, HODs, crews, cast, vendors and the broader screen community.

We will have ongoing conversations with New Zealand producers of NZFC-funded productions and will work directly with them to support the problem-solving required. We will continue to consult with SPADA, along with the other guilds and industry organisations and will share our plans as we seek concrete ways to support the industry. The implications for NZSPG eligibility are also being worked through. We are reviewing existing programmes that could be expanded or enhanced to better prepare our industry as we move through and beyond this difficult time. At the forefront of all our discussions will be the health and safety of all those who work in the New Zealand film industry and the ongoing sustainability of the wider screen sector.

We encourage you to share with us any feedback, questions or suggestions regarding support for the screen sector at this time by writing to covid19impact@nzfilm.co.nz.

NZFC Operations

Last week, the NZFC decided to suspend all international travel grants, such as the Producer International Travel Fund (PITF).

All other funding opportunities remain open and available.

Please prepare your funding application as usual and any issues arising from the COVID-19 situation will be reviewed at the different milestone dates (e.g. funding decision, start date, etc).

If you are concerned about the potential impact of COVID-19 on your funded project or funding application, please:

  • review your funding contract; or
  • contact relevant NZFC staff directly.

With regards to the NZFC and staff, we have put the following measures in place:

  • Encouraging meetings via phone or video conference, in order to reduce meetings in person.
  • We will remain available to meet filmmakers and other stakeholders, but these usually will  be virtual meetings.
  • Only essential domestic travel will be undertaken.
  • International travel for staff is suspended.

NZFC staff are following the precautions suggested by the Ministry of Health and we encourage you to do the same. If staff believe they may have been exposed to someone who has recently travelled in or through COVID-19-affected countries, or who has been diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus, they will self-isolate as per the Ministry of Health guidelines.

We will update the NZFC website regularly and for comprehensive information about COVID-19, these resources are available for up to date information and advice:

Please continue to take care of yourselves, and each other.
